It’s My Anniversary – Find Out How I Celebrated

This post is a day late, but it’s still appropriate.  Yesterday was July 23, 2016. My anniversary.  No, not for my wedding.  It’s the anniversary of the day I started to Get Healthy.  One year ago, I started the RM3 protocol from Tucson Medical Weight Loss.  It was the day that my life changed for the better.  When I started the program, all I wanted to do was get rid of a severe case of unwanted body fat.  I needed to reduce my body mass by over 100 pounds, and this program seemed the best option for me.  I wanted to avoid surgery, get the weight off quickly and I wanted to learn how to eat properly.  I knew this program would help, but there was so much more that awaited me.

Liberating my body of the unwanted pounds was just the tip of the iceberg.  So much more took place.  Not only did I reduce my excess physical baggage, but a lot of things both emotionally and mentally happened as well.  The thoughts that I used to have of self-loathing and worthlessness went away.  I suddenly felt a renewed interest in my life.  Goals that I thought were unattainable were suddenly within my reach.  My marriage began to heal as well as my health.  My relationships with my children grew stronger.

Not to mention all the physical capabilities that my body regained.  Walking up stairs was no longer a chore.  Walking down stairs was not the painful journey it used to be.  Running became a possibility (I routinely joke that I used to be the guy you sacrificed to save the group during a zombie apocalypse.  Now I might actually have a fighting chance to stay with the group).  Lowering myself to the floor and getting back up were no longer laborious tasks.  I was able to jettison my CPAP.  Intimacy with my wife took on a whole new meaning.  And for once in a very long time, I could actually start thinking about exercising and look forward to it.

In February of 2016, I came off the RM3 program and moved into what is called the Lifetime Maintenance mode.  I weighed in at 227 pounds.  That was five months ago and I have largely been able to maintain my weight since then.  I’ve become an avid cyclist, and I average 20 miles every other day.  I love both road riding and mountain biking.  I love the exercise, the early mornings, and the opportunity to commune with God on my rides.  I’ve had a few spiritual experiences out on the road.

One of my goals has been to ride my bike with the Buena High School Mountain Bike Team, of which my son is a member.  I’ve longed for the day when I would be in shape enough to join them on their practice rides.  One of those rides is an ascent up Carr Canyon Road, which is in the Huachuca Mountains that borders on the south of my home town of Sierra Vista, AZ.  It’s over 2,200 feet up over the course of 6 miles.

Saturday, July 23, 2016 – on the anniversary of my start down the Get Healthy path – I reached this goal.   I can’t think of a better way of celebrating my one year mark than by knocking off an item on my bucket list.  And what a ride it was!  I will let the video above speak to my experience with it.  I will only add that I am now giving serious consideration to making this ride a common event on my exercise path.  I’m also giving serious consideration to riding in the El Tour de Tucson this year.  With my averages, I think it’s a cinch.  It’s just a matter of coming up with the registration fee.

I’ve also participated in two cycling challenges over the past couple of months.  The first was in June for the Great Cycle Challenge of 2016.  My goal was to ride 300 miles for the entire month and raise a minimum of $500.00 for the Children’s Cancer Research Fund.  I exceeded both goals.  As such, I got a really nifty cycling jersey.  The second challenge was sponsored by local bike shop, Sun & Spokes.  They call it the Tour de France Challenge.  The only requirement is that you ride for at least 45 minutes for every day that the riders of the Tour de France are riding.  That’s a total of 21 days, with two rest days.  I aced that challenge as well.  My prize?  I get a free dinner hosted by Sun & Spokes.   😎  Check out the gallery below for some of my cycling imagery.

  1. So many questions. I started RM3 and there are no support groups. I’ve watched all of your videos as encouragement. Congrats on your hard work.
    Have you been successful at changing your relationship with food?

    1. Hello Dawn,
      You are correct as I have been unable to find any specific support groups as well. That’s fine for me, though, as I am more of an introvert than anything else. One thing I did do, though, is look for a local Overeater’s Anonymous group. The RM3 program isn’t the issue, it’s your attitude towards food that you’ll need to change. For me, my biggest problem came from staying up too late and snacking at night.

      To answer your question, I have changed my relationship with food. Although I have found myself slipping into some old habits, I have completely forgone some of my old go-to foods. For example, I hardly ever eat at fast food restaurants these days. If I do, I try to go for healthier choices, such as Subway or salads. And I have completely done away with (knowingly) drinking regular sodas. I am a diet-soda drinker now. It’s not completely healthy, but it’s better than what I’ve been doing. I have managed to maintain my weight, and have stayed within 10 pounds of my original weight when I came off the program. I have completely thrown myself into my exercise regime, too. I’m an avid cyclist, now, and I love getting out and riding my bike at least 15 miles every other day. I need to get into some kind of weight training program, though.

      So far, this program has worked wonders for my life. And I am more worried now about what I eat than I have been in the past. I’m watching my calorie intake daily, and making sure I get in a good ride at least every other day when weather permits. I’m hoping to get back in to making these videos again, too. I’m so glad that my videos have had an impact for you, and I enjoy hearing how others are improving their own lives by making the choice to get healthy.
